Pope Benedict XVI to visit Poland end of May: Church
Evénement du Jeu Mai 25, 2006 2:00 am au Mer Mai 31, 2006 1:59 am

The Polish episcopate confirmed that Pope Benedict XVI would travel to Poland at the end of May, taking in the Auschwitz death camp in the south of the country during his four-day visit.

German-born Benedict XVI will also visit the capital, Warsaw, the shrine of the Black Madonna in Czestochowa, the southern city of Krakow, and Wadowice, the town where his predecessor, John Paul II, was born in 1920, Bishop Piotr Libera said.

The pope will arrive in Poland on May 25 and leave May 28.

Libera, who is the secretary-general of the episcopate, said that the dates and the itinerary of the pope's visit had been approved by the Vatican. A delegate from the Vatican, Alberto Gasbarri, earlier this month visited Poland to prepare the pope's visit.

According to Father Robert Necek, a spokesman for Krakow Archbishop Stanislaw Dziwisz, Benedict XVI personally asked that he be allowed to pray at Auschwitz when he visits Poland.

At least 1.1 million men, women and children perished in the camp in southern Poland in World War II at the hands of Poland's Nazi German occupiers.

Most of them were European Jews exterminated in the purpose-built gas chambers of the most grimly efficient of the Nazi death camps. They were among the six million people who perished during the Nazis' chilling "Final Solution".

The pope, who was elected in April, following the death at the beginning of that month of his immensely popular predecessor, John Paul II, was initially scheduled to visit Poland in June but changed the date to avoid a clash with the soccer World Cup in Germany.

Benedict XVI's visit to Poland will be his second foreign trip since his election to the papacy. He visited Germany for the Roman Catholic Church's World Youth Day celebrations in August.
