WARSAW. APRIL 26. INTERFAX CENTRAL EUROPE - Swedish white goods
manufacturer Electrolux is moving some of its production lines from its
factory in Torsvik, Sweden, to Poland as part of a consolidation plan
that will see the total number of factories in Poland rise to four for a
total investment of EUR 132 mln, an Electrolux press spokesperson told
Interfax Wednesday.
"A number of production lines will be moved to existing facilities,"
said Anders Edholm, vice president for media relations and issues
management, said. "We are opening up new factories in Poland, moving
production lines from several countries to Poland, so you could say we
are consolidating at the same time.
"With the [new] Swidnica factory, we will have invested EUR 132 mln in
production facilities in Poland, and all will serve European market," he
added.
Reports in the Swedish and Polish press had stated that the Swedish
company was considering moving the Torsvik operation to Poland.
According to Edholm, the production lines for compact appliances,
dishwashers, washing machines and tumble dryers will be moved to Poland,
while development and the "mini-kitchen business" will remain in
Torsvik.
Electrolux currently has three factories in Poland, including a new
factory inaugurated Wednesday in Olawa, which will produce washing
machines and is taking over production from a plant in Nuremburg,
Germany, Edholm said.
The fourth factory to be built in Swidnica in southwestern Poland will
start production next year and will follow a consolidation program to
serve all of Europe.
Edholm added that it had become obvious even to Swedish unions that it
was impossible to make the Torsvik factory competitive, pointing out low
Polish labor costs, proximity to growing CEE markets and Poland's
logistics advantages had been deciding factors in Electrolux's strategy.
"I think this was rather expected," Edholm said of the Torsvik move.
"The trade union asked to verify why, but they agreed that it is
impossible to make the factory in Torsvik competitive.
"There are several reasons why we chose Poland--the good logistics
position, the proximity to roads, railways, airports is very good," he
said. "Also there is the availability of skilled workers, the very
competitive labor costs, and we have very good support and cooperation
with local authorities."
Edholm said it was too early to say how many people would be employed
during the consolidation. He added that 162 people will be affected by
the Torsvik production-line move.
