Poland mourns as 67 die in roof collapse
|
Poland is beginning three days of mourning after 67 people died when the roof of an exhibition hall collapsed.
The chances of finding anyone else alive are now slim - but in a short time rescue workers will resume the search for survivors.
A further 160 were injured after the roof of an exhibition hall in the Polish city of Chorzow collapsed.
Rescuers had blown hot air into the collapsed structure in the hope of helping survivors keep warm as they attempted to dig them out.
Pigeon enthusiasts from Poland, Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, the Czech Republic, Hungary and Ukraine had converged on the exhibition hall and officials said the dead included foreigners and identified one as a Belgian.
Hospitals said five Germans, a Czech and a Belgian were injured. Two of the dead are known to be children.
The fire brigade and police said the weight of snow on the roof caused the collapse, but the building's manager told Polish television that snow had been regularly cleared from the roof.
Poland is experiencing its coldest winter in several decades.
A cold snap has knocked temperatures to as low as minus 30 degrees Celsius in parts of Europe.
The freeze has killed more than 100 people across the region, disrupted transport, highlighted gas supply problems and frozen parts of the Black Sea.
