Myskina loses to Polish teen in Warsaw
|
Former French Open champion Anastasia Myskina lost to Polish teenager Agnieszka Radwanska in Tuesday's opening-round action at the $600,000 J&S Cup.
The sixth-seeded Myskina was sent packing by the 17-year-old wild card Radwanksa 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 on the red clay at Warszawianka Tennis Centre. The world No. 12 Myskina captured Roland Garros in 2004.
On Wednesday, seventh-seeded American star Venus Williams will encounter the upstart Radwanka's sister Urszula. The former world No. 1 and five-time Grand Slam titlist Williams titled here in 2004 and was the runner-up in 2003.
Two others seeds avoided Day-2 upsets, as No. 5 Italian Francesca Schiavone whipped Finn Emma Laine 6-0, 6-1 and No. 9 Slovak Daniela Hantuchova overcame Israeli Anna Smashnova 4-6, 7-5, 6-3.
Other first-round wins came for Ukrainian qualifiers Julia Vakulenko and Tatiana Perebiynis, Russian Elena Likhovtseva, Bulgarian lucky-loser Tszvetana Pironkova and Serbian Ana Ivanovic, who took out Polish crowd favorite Marta Domachowska 6-4, 7-5. Vakulenko, who straight-setted Swiss Emmanuelle Gagliardi on Day 2, will face top-seeded Belgian Kim Clijsters in the second round. The former top-ranked Clijsters is the reigning U.S. Open champ.
