Joe Van H. 's 'killer' might serve out sentence in Poland

The suspected killer of Joe Van Holsbeeck may be forced to serve out his eventual sentence in Poland, the Polish national public prosecutor in Warsaw said.

The 17-year-old youth is still being questioned by Polish police and will then be extradited to Belgium.

He was arrested on the Polish-Lithuanian border on Thursday, 15 days after allegedly stabbing Van Holsbeeck five times at Brussels Central station.

The Polish national was arrested in the house of an elderly woman, who stressed she had no idea what the youth was accused of.

"As a Roma, I am obligated to give shelter to another Roma," she said.

The suspect is believed to have stayed at the
woman's house for five days. He was arrested after using his mobile phone.

Some 200 Polish police had been hunting the youth in recent days.

The Eastern European nation was shocked that the murder was allegedly committed by one its citizens and police had made the suspect's arrest a top priority.

However, friends and family of the suspect had been assisting the fugitive in recent days. He was eventually arrested at about 1.35pm on Thursday.

The youth was reportedly previously arrested with the 16-year-old Anderlecht youth and co-accused in the Brussels Central murder for other criminal offences.

In 2003, both youths were arrested for stealing in Brussels. They originate from the same region in Poland, but are said to have met each other in Belgium.

The role of the main suspect's older brother — who has also been arrested in connection to current investigations — remains unclear.

According to some newspapers, he was the axis of gang trading in stolen goods between Belgium and Poland.

The extradition of the main suspect from Poland is now expected to take place very quickly, possibly within two weeks. However, if convicted, the suspects might serve out their sentences in Poland.
